About the Lumenlab PCB

Lumenlab is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ericmcdaniel, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 99.9 × 80 mm, with 72 components from 46 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-WROOM-32E, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MP2338, AP7361C-33E, SN74AHCT1G125, SSD1306 and LM386MX-1/NOPB. By type, the board carries 24 capacitors, 21 resistors, 7 ICs, 6 connectors, 6 test points and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

A gaming and entertainment platform for RGB LED strips that fills your space with abstract, retro, arcade-like games and animations powered by an ESP32.

The LumenLab was built in two phases. The first phase (labeled as "Version 1") was a prototype that used through-hole components hand-soldered on to several perf boards. This was a good start, especially for making progress in the early stages of the software development, however the components did not work exactly as desired, making its maintanance more of a hassle than it was a benefit. Designing a PCB to be professionally manufactured became a clear and obvious choice, allowing the LumenLab to be scaled into a clean, stable device.

Lumenlab: common questions

What microcontroller does the Lumenlab use?

The Lumenlab is built around the ESP32-WROOM-32E, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Lumenlab PCB?

The Lumenlab measures 99.9 × 80 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.600198 mm thick.

How many components are on the Lumenlab?

72 components, from 46 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Lumenlab design files?

From the ericmcdaniel/lumenlab repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Lumenlab design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which ericmcdaniel chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Lumenlab without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
