From the project

Kicad design files for prism laser direct imager using up5k FPGA and ESP32

KiCad design files for the Hexastorm, an open-hardware prism laser direct imager. This project utilizes an ESP32-S3 and an iCE40 UP5K FPGA to achieve high-resolution, high-speed laser exposure.

The design files are organized into two primary categories:

MCU: ESP32-S3 (N32R8V) utilizing 8MB Octal PSRAM for rapid image buffering. FPGA: Lattice iCE40 UltraPlus 5k (UP5K) for nanosecond-level laser modulation and real-time synchronization with the prism index pulses. Vision & Alignment: Features a dedicated 24-pin FPC camera connector supporting the OV2640 sensor for precise laser alignment.…

Firestarter: common questions

What microcontroller does the Firestarter use?

The Firestarter is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-2, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Firestarter PCB?

The Firestarter measures 88.4 × 63.6 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Firestarter?

120 components, from 41 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Firestarter design files?

From the hstarmans/firestarter repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Firestarter design in my own project?

It is published under CC-BY-NC-4.0, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Firestarter without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
