About the Bramble PCB

Bramble is an open source ESP32 PCB design by justinlindh, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 96 × 50 mm, with 84 components from 42 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8R2, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2SC6, TP4056-42, DW01A, FS8205A and XC6220B331MR-G. By type, the board carries 26 capacitors, 21 resistors, 8 ICs, 7 diodes, 5 transistors and 4 switches.

It belongs with the rf & radio, displays & leds and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Privacy-first LoRa mesh networking for ESP32-S3, built with ESP-IDF

A full Bramble mesh node (TX-capable; the mesh has no receive-only role) built into a 90s-pager formfactor: always-readable 2.13" e-paper, 1S LiPo with USB-C charge and load-share, magnetic buzzer plus coin vibration motor, and a 3D-printed enclosure. It runs stock Bramble firmware as a new board target (bramblepager`) that reuses every Heltec-V3 pin assignment legal on an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, adds an SSD1680 e-paper display, and carries an ATGM336H GNSS receiver. Board is ~96x50mm landscape, 2-layer 1.6mm, built for JLCPCB economic PCBA. This directory is the source of truth for the design.

Bramble: common questions

What microcontroller does the Bramble use?

The Bramble is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8R2, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Bramble PCB?

The Bramble measures 96 × 50 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Bramble?

84 components, from 42 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Bramble design files?

From the justinlindh/bramble repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Bramble design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which justinlindh chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Bramble without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
