Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the TPS54202DDC, ESP32-S3, W25Q128JVS, USBLC6-2SC6 and MH253. By type, the board carries 122 capacitors, 60 diodes, 50 resistors, 17 ICs, 5 inductors and 4 switches.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

56 LED rotating color display with RP2040 and ESP32 microcontrollers

The Rotating Color Display device comprises two primary units: a power supply unit and a display board (figure 1). Both are circular in design, with a diameter of 120mm, similar to the dimensions of a standard Compact Disk. The display board is rotated by a CD motor. Energy is wirelessly transmitted from the power supply unit to the display board, eliminating the need for wired connections.

RD56: common questions

What microcontroller does the RD56 use?

The RD56 is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the RD56 PCB?

The RD56 measures 120 × 118.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6062 mm thick.

How many components are on the RD56?

263 components, from 44 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the RD56 design files?

From the lhm0/rotating_display_color repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the RD56 design in my own project?

It is published under CC-BY-NC-4.0, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the RD56 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
