About the Keyboard leds PCB

Keyboard leds is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by modern-hobbyist, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 87.7 × 51.5 mm, with 55 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q128JVS, XC6206PxxxMR-Regulator_Linear, TFT_320x240, TUSB320 and SN74AHCT1G125DBVR. By type, the board carries 24 capacitors, 14 resistors, 8 ICs, 4 connectors, 2 fuses and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the keyboards, audio and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

A custom PCB for reading MIDI output from a keyboard and lighting the respective LEDs.

This project is a custom RP2040-based LED controller designed to add reactive RGB lighting to a piano or MIDI keyboard by reading the incoming MIDI stream and driving high-density LED strips.

This is my second iteration of MIDI-driven keyboard LEDs, but the first time going all in with a fully custom PCB, power-path management, and an onboard touchscreen UI.

⚠️ Status: Work in progress Hardware is under active development, firmware and features are evolving, and this README will be updated as the project matures.

Keyboard leds: common questions

What microcontroller does the Keyboard leds use?

The Keyboard leds is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Keyboard leds PCB?

The Keyboard leds measures 87.7 × 51.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Keyboard leds?

55 components, from 29 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Keyboard leds design files?

From the modern-hobbyist/keyboard-leds repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Keyboard leds design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with modern-hobbyist. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Keyboard leds without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
