From the project
Custom ESP32-C3 power-management testbed for small satellite firmware experiments
ChipSat v1 is a custom 45mm x 45mm PCB I built to test how firmware power-management decisions affect the actual current draw of a small satellite-style system. It was developed alongside my power budget work for the Duke Solar Sail project.
The goal was not to reproduce flight hardware exactly. Instead, I wanted a physical testbed where I could keep the hardware fixed and measure how much the power draw changed as I switched between different firmware schedules.

Chipsat v1: common questions
What microcontroller does the Chipsat v1 use?
The Chipsat v1 is built around the ESP32-C3-MINI-1-N4, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Chipsat v1 PCB?
The Chipsat v1 measures 45.5 × 46 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Chipsat v1?
59 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Chipsat v1 design files?
From the noellayang/chipsat-v1 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Chipsat v1 design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which noellayang chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the Chipsat v1 without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
