From the project

DIY air quality monitor: ESP32-C3, 4 Sensirion/Bosch sensors, custom 4-layer PCB, ESPHome firmware with Home Assistant integration.

A DIY open-source air quality monitor built around an ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, featuring a custom 4-layer PCB with four Sensirion/Bosch sensors, a laser-cut glass top panel, and a 3D-printed holder. Firmware runs on ESPHome and integrates natively with Home Assistant. An optional PMSA003I particulate matter add-on connects via the onboard QWIIC connector to add PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10, and EPA AQI measurements.

Air quality sensor: common questions

What microcontroller does the Air quality sensor use?

The Air quality sensor is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Air quality sensor PCB?

The Air quality sensor measures 50.8 × 45 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Air quality sensor?

75 components, from 39 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Air quality sensor design files?

From the roepkefeller/air-quality-sensor repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Air quality sensor design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with roepkefeller. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Air quality sensor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
