About the Simple keeb reuser PCB

Simple keeb reuser is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by CRImier, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 49 × 44 mm, with 70 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the SL2.1A, AP1117-33, W25Q32JVSS, 74HC595 and 74HC165. By type, the board carries 32 diodes, 20 resistors, 8 ICs, 5 connectors and 5 capacitors.

It belongs with the keyboards and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

My KiCad boards. Can't be bothered uploading individually anymore, so here you go.

This is basically an SPI GPIO expander with 32 bits, designed at laptop keyboard reuse. PCF8574-like, it has low-strength default pullups and strong pulldowns you can enable. It's chip shortage-proof, sorta - it's a combination of 595 and 165 chips. It has two SPI ports, one input-only and one output-only - they're joined into a single port by default.

It's designed for reusing laptop keyboards on the cheap. I've designed this during chip shortage times, and never made use of it. I recommend you use ready-to-go I2C or SPI expander ICs like a normal person. This is more of a decent test for…

Simple keeb reuser: common questions

What microcontroller does the Simple keeb reuser use?

The Simple keeb reuser is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Simple keeb reuser PCB?

The Simple keeb reuser measures 49 × 44 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Simple keeb reuser?

70 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Simple keeb reuser design files?

From the CRImier/MyKiCad repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Simple keeb reuser design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which CRImier chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Simple keeb reuser without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
