About the Ice core PCB

Ice core is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by enkhbold470, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 6-layer board measuring 80 × 60 mm, with 74 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2SC6, AP63203WU-7, AP2112K-1.2TRG1, W25Q32JVSSIQ and ICE40UP5K-SG48I. By type, the board carries 35 capacitors, 18 resistors, 8 ICs, 4 connectors, 4 diodes and 3 switches.

It belongs with the test & measurement and robotics & motion designs in this gallery.

From the project

Five KiCad 10 boards (4- and 6-layer): ESP32-S3 industrial gateway, USB-C PD bench supply, RP2040 logic analyzer, FOC motor controller, iCE40 FPGA board. KiCad projects, gerbers, BOM, STEP, renders and design-process videos.

A 6-layer iCE40UP5K FPGA board with 8 MB PSRAM and three Pmods, programmed and clocked over USB-C by an RP2040.

Not fabricated, assembled or powered. Every number on this page is measured by KiCad 10 on the files in this folder; the full measurements are in report.json.

Ice Core is an FPGA board: a Lattice iCE40UP5K with 8 MB of QSPI PSRAM and three Pmod host ports, programmed and clocked over USB-C by an RP2040, on 80 x 60 mm of 6-layer board. It was designed with the HeyPCB method on KiCad 10 (the headless heypcb-kicad pipeline, routed by Freerouting 2.4.1) from the brief in board.json.

Ice core: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ice core use?

The Ice core is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Ice core PCB?

The Ice core measures 80 × 60 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ice core?

74 components, from 32 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ice core design files?

From the enkhbold470/kicad-projects repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ice core design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which enkhbold470 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Ice core without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
