Building custom flight computers

Starting off the year as just a concept, the Motor Board has taken shape as an impressive new piece of the MIDAS ecosystem. Unofficially known as “Spinny Antenna Motor” (SAM) Board, the project serves as a method of control for the team’s SAM Turret antenna tracker, which aims to automatically track the rocket’s position during flight and maintain optimal antenna orientation to get the best possible range for MIDAS telemetry. In addition to cementing MIDAS’s role as an important part of our team’s ground operations, the Motor Board has served as a testbed for WiFi as a new way of…

MotorBoard MK1: common questions

What microcontroller does the MotorBoard MK1 use?

The MotorBoard MK1 is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1U, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the MotorBoard MK1 PCB?

The MotorBoard MK1 measures 65 × 70 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MotorBoard MK1?

59 components, from 32 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MotorBoard MK1 design files?

From the ISSUIUC/ISS-PCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MotorBoard MK1 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ISSUIUC. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MotorBoard MK1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
