From the project

Building custom flight computers

MIDAS MK2 is the new and improved generation of the Illinois Space Society's MIDAS flight computer. Continuing MIDAS’s mission as the centerpiece of a flexible avionics ecosystem, MK2 features data acquisition, live telemetry, board-to-board communication interfaces, and pyrotechnic capabilities for in-flight control. This new revision retains the diverse suite of sensors from the original and features upgraded pyro circuitry with an emphasis on redundancy and reliability. As the team pushes closer and closer to space, MK2 employs a new generation of LoRa radios with 60% higher transmit power…

MIDAS MK2.1: common questions

What microcontroller does the MIDAS MK2.1 use?

The MIDAS MK2.1 is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1U, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the MIDAS MK2.1 PCB?

The MIDAS MK2.1 measures 45 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MIDAS MK2.1?

186 components, from 76 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MIDAS MK2.1 design files?

From the ISSUIUC/ISS-PCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MIDAS MK2.1 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ISSUIUC. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MIDAS MK2.1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
