From the project

Building custom flight computers

MIDAS MK1 is the fifth generation of the Illinois Space Society's SRAD avionics systems and the first to serve as a full-fledged rocketry altimeter. Combining the functionality of TARS together with the advanced pyrotechnic circuitry seen on many commercial models into a smaller form factor, MIDAS facilitates data collection, telemetry, and execution of inflight events. More than just a single unit, MIDAS is intended for placement on multiple stages of a rocket and can serve as a center of more complex avionics networks such as our onboard live video system.

MIDAS MK1: common questions

What microcontroller does the MIDAS MK1 use?

The MIDAS MK1 is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1U, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the MIDAS MK1 PCB?

The MIDAS MK1 measures 60 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MIDAS MK1?

201 components, from 76 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MIDAS MK1 design files?

From the ISSUIUC/ISS-PCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MIDAS MK1 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ISSUIUC. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MIDAS MK1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
