ESP32-C3 IoT sensor node with USB-C power path management — KiCad PCB design project

A 4-layer ESP32-C3 IoT sensor board with onboard LiPo charging, SD storage, and a multi-sensor front end, designed in KiCad by following Tech Explorations' full board-development pipeline tutorial — my most advanced build yet, covering the complete flow from schematic to manufacturing and assembly.

This board is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, a RISC-V Wi-Fi/BLE module, paired with a small sensor suite (environmental, audio, and light), onboard SPI flash, microSD storage, and a full LiPo battery charging path — a compact, self-contained IoT sensor node platform.

Esp32-sensor board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Esp32-sensor board use?

The Esp32-sensor board is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02-H4, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Esp32-sensor board?

The Esp32-sensor board measures 99.6 × 55.9 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Esp32-sensor board?

80 components, from 40 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Esp32-sensor board design files?

From the marwantm/esp32-sensor-board repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Esp32-sensor board design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with marwantm. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Esp32-sensor board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
