About the MatrixDrive PCB

MatrixDrive is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Matrixite, published on GitHub. It is a 8-layer board measuring 100 × 65 mm, with 143 components from 65 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2350B, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the S29GL032N90TFI040, SN74LVC8T245PWR, SN74LVC1G17DBVR, W25Q16JVSSIQ and W25Q128JVSIQ. By type, the board carries 45 resistors, 36 capacitors, 22 test points, 20 ICs, 5 diodes and 4 transistors.

From the project

MatrixDrive is a USB-loadable Mega Drive/Genesis cartridge

MatrixDrive Revision B is a prototype USB-loadable Mega Drive/Genesis cartridge that can also supply ROM to a real 32X, run Master System software on compatible consoles, and act as the upper cartridge in Sonic & Knuckles lock-on mode. USB-C exposes a removable FAT16 drive named MATRIXDRV; after one ROM is copied and safely ejected, the RP2350B installs it into non-volatile parallel NOR.

MatrixDrive: common questions

What microcontroller does the MatrixDrive use?

The MatrixDrive is built around the RP2350B, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the MatrixDrive PCB?

The MatrixDrive measures 100 × 65 mm, has 8 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MatrixDrive?

143 components, from 65 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MatrixDrive design files?

From the Matrixite/MatrixDrive repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MatrixDrive design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Matrixite. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MatrixDrive without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
