About the Stencil PCB

Stencil is an open source ESP32 PCB design by mikelawrence, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 52.5 × 59.7 mm, with 97 components from 44 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-2-N32R16V, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the SN74LV1T34DBV, TLV62568DRL, MAX98357AETE, TLV75533PDRV and INA228AIDGSR. By type, the board carries 41 capacitors, 21 resistors, 19 ICs, 6 connectors, 4 diodes and 2 switches.

It belongs with the sensors, iot & wireless and audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

ESPHome Indoor Multi-Sensor hardware. This design supports Radar/PIR Presence, Temperature, Humidity, Pressure, Light, CO2, CO, VOC, NOX and PM sensors. Add a speaker and microphone and you have the kitchen sink too! Click the link below to configure a new device.

The PCB is designed in KiCad. Fabrication and is tuned toward JCLPCB. I chose not to use JLCPCB for assembly because they had a hard time with some the parts I included in this design. When I had the boards fabricated I also had them panelize two PCBs and produce a stencil for both for the panelized boards.

Stencil: common questions

What microcontroller does the Stencil use?

The Stencil is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-2-N32R16V, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Stencil PCB?

The Stencil measures 52.5 × 59.7 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Stencil?

97 components, from 44 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Stencil design files?

From the mikelawrence/esphome-indoor-multi-sensor-hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Stencil design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which mikelawrence chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Stencil without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
