About the SNES Basic UV 1-1 PCB

SNES Basic UV 1-1 is an open source PIC PCB design by MouseBiteLabs, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 110.2 × 77.8 mm, with 40 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC12F629, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the CIC, SNES Mask ROM, 27C160, AS6C1008 and MAD-1. By type, the board carries 12 ICs, 9 capacitors, 7 resistors, 3 transistors, 3 test points and 3 diodes.

A collection of Super Nintendo cartridge circuit boards

This is an updated design of my old SNES Basic cartridge boards, which can use the original mask ROM chips from SNES carts, or the older 27C160 UV EPROM chips. You can even use my 29F160 to 27C160 adapter boards, which use brand new 29F160 flash chips if you don't want to deal with old parts.

Functionally, this design is the same as the older one, but under the hood I have ported the project over from Eagle to KiCad, and heavily cleaned up the schematic and some of the trace routings. I also added support for the MAD-1 chip from a donor board, unlocking a lot of potential for replacing old…

SNES Basic UV 1-1: common questions

What microcontroller does the SNES Basic UV 1-1 use?

The SNES Basic UV 1-1 is built around the PIC12F629, from the PIC family.

How big is the SNES Basic UV 1-1 PCB?

The SNES Basic UV 1-1 measures 110.2 × 77.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SNES Basic UV 1-1?

40 components, from 20 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SNES Basic UV 1-1 design files?

From the MouseBiteLabs/Super-Nintendo-Cartridges repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SNES Basic UV 1-1 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which MouseBiteLabs chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SNES Basic UV 1-1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
