About the Tinker beetle PCB

Tinker beetle is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Tinkerbug-Robotics, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 8-layer board measuring 22.5 × 69.6 mm, with 221 components from 70 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3RH2, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the FSUSB63UMX, ISM6HG256XTR, QMC5883P, BMP581 and LC86GLAMD. By type, the board carries 83 capacitors, 77 resistors, 23 ICs, 10 diodes, 8 transistors and 8 inductors.

It belongs with the rf & radio and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Model rocket flight computer, ground station, iOS app, and simulation

A reduced-capability flight computer. The design starts from a copy of rocket-computer/ (since renamed tinker-mantis/) as it stood at the fork point, and diverges from there by removing capability rather than adding it.

There is no ongoing relationship between the two boards. rocket-computer-mini is not a derived revision, a build option, or a stripped configuration of rocket-computer — nothing is shared, nothing tracks upstream, and a change to one is never expected to propagate to the other. The starting geometry and schematic were simply a convenient place to begin.

Tinker beetle: common questions

What microcontroller does the Tinker beetle use?

The Tinker beetle is built around the ESP32-S3RH2, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Tinker beetle PCB?

The Tinker beetle measures 22.5 × 69.6 mm, has 8 copper layers and is 1.63008 mm thick.

How many components are on the Tinker beetle?

221 components, from 70 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Tinker beetle design files?

From the Tinkerbug-Robotics/TinkerRocket repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Tinker beetle design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Tinkerbug-Robotics chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Tinker beetle without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
