About the Main PCB

Main is an open source ESP32 PCB design by jason-watkins, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 70 × 65 mm, with 91 components from 52 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the 74LVC1G17, USBLC6-2SC6, TS3USB221A, CYPD3176 and TPS63070. By type, the board carries 37 resistors, 22 capacitors, 10 diodes, 8 ICs, 7 connectors and 3 transistors.

It belongs with the displays & leds and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

USB-C powered nixie tube clock. Four IN-12B digits, two INS-1 colon lamps, K155ID1 BCD decoder/drivers.

USB-PD negotiates 5-12V supply and feeds it into 3 converters:

- Flyback boost: 170V for the tube anodes - 3.3V buck boost for the MCU. Boost exists to make sure a 3.3V FTDI type UART adapter provides the full 3.3V to the rail. - 5V buck for the BCD drivers, bypassed if the source itself is 5V

The KiCad project lives in the jason-watkins/nixie-clock repository on GitHub; these links point at the commit this page was built from.

Main: common questions

What microcontroller does the Main use?

The Main is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Main PCB?

The Main measures 70 × 65 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Main?

91 components, from 52 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Main design files?

From the jason-watkins/nixie-clock repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Main design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which jason-watkins chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Main without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
