About the Adapter board r2

Adapter board r2 is an open source ESP32 PCB design by picafe, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 68.4 × 33.4 mm, with 51 components from 30 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2SC6, CH340X, AP2114HA-3.3TRG1, YSN8900AP3 and SHT4X. By type, the board carries 18 capacitors, 10 ICs, 10 resistors, 4 connectors, 3 transistors and 2 fuses.

It belongs with the displays & leds and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

A 32x8 bicolor LED matrix module composed of 4 8x8 matrices based on the Holtek HT16K33A I2C LED driver. V1 paired it with a stacked adapter (RP2040 Zero + DS3231 module); V2 redesigns the matrix routing and puts an ESP32-C3, RTC, and environment sensors on a half-length adapter

Inspired by the common 32x8 red LED matrix modules that use the MAX7219 IC, I wanted to make my own module but with more colours and functionality, while keeping the same asthetic.

Adapter board r2: common questions

What microcontroller does the Adapter board r2 use?

The Adapter board r2 is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Adapter board r2?

The Adapter board r2 measures 68.4 × 33.4 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Adapter board r2?

51 components, from 30 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Adapter board r2 design files?

From the picafe/bicolor-matrix-v2 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Adapter board r2 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with picafe. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Adapter board r2 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
