About the Controller PCB

Controller is an open source ESP32 PCB design by micthiesen, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 150 × 110 mm, with 99 components from 99 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C6-WROOM-1-N8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AP63203WU-7, TCA9517ADGKR, TPS3808G01DBVR, TPS2553DBVR and SN74LVC1G08DBVR. By type, the board carries 39 resistors, 23 capacitors, 12 ICs, 9 connectors, 8 diodes and 4 transistors.

From the project

Aquarium skimmer controller: capacitive sensing, ESP32-C6 firmware, and separated mains switching

Open controller.kicadpro. This is the accepted 150 × 110 mm, four-layer upper board: 117 footprints, 166 unrouted connections**, clean strict ERC, no schematic parity differences and no ordinary DRC findings. Four 3.2 mm NPTH mounts are inset 7 mm and align with the mains board below.

The 5 V service input J2 uses JST S2B-XH-A/XHP-2, distinct from the 12 V Micro-Fit ports. See the connector ECO.

Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Controller use?

The Controller is built around the ESP32-C6-WROOM-1-N8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Controller PCB?

The Controller measures 150 × 110 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6062 mm thick.

How many components are on the Controller?

99 components, from 99 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Controller design files?

From the micthiesen/crystal-shim repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Controller design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with micthiesen. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
