About the AS3397 proto SMS PCB

AS3397 proto SMS is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by PhysicsDptAngers, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 70.5 × 100.2 mm, with 105 components from 40 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the TS922, TL072 and 74HC4050. By type, the board carries 49 resistors, 36 capacitors, 7 ICs, 5 transistors, 3 test points and 3 diodes.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

Open source, analog and polyphonic synthesizer

These PCBs allow the generation of one analog audio voice using the AS3397 chip, controlled by an RP2040/RP2530 (Raspberry Pi Pico) microcontroller.

We offer three different circuit designs:

- Main (SMD 1206): This is the reference board, designed to be controlled by the conductor board along with other voice boards to form a polyphonic synthesizer. It uses relatively large SMD 1206 (Surface-Mounted) components, which can be soldered by hand with some practice.

AS3397 proto SMS: common questions

What microcontroller does the AS3397 proto SMS use?

The AS3397 proto SMS is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the AS3397 proto SMS PCB?

The AS3397 proto SMS measures 70.5 × 100.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the AS3397 proto SMS?

105 components, from 40 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the AS3397 proto SMS design files?

From the PhysicsDptAngers/polyUAnalog repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the AS3397 proto SMS design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which PhysicsDptAngers chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the AS3397 proto SMS without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
