About the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit PCB

OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by mibs510, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board, with 562 components from 141 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2354B, from the Raspberry Pi family. Other key parts include the 74LVC2T45DC, TPS61165DRVR, USBLC6-2SC6, TPS564242DRLR and TPS552892QWRYQRQ1. By type, the board carries 244 capacitors, 205 resistors, 39 ICs, 21 diodes, 15 connectors and 13 transistors.

It belongs with the audio, displays & leds and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Open-hardware Android automotive head unit built around Raspberry Pi CM5 and RP2354, with robust vehicle power, audio, display, CAN, camera, and serviceability design.

OpenXTCM5 is an in-progress open-hardware project for building a capable, repairable Android automotive head unit around a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5) and an RP2354 real-time controller.

This began as both a learning project and a response to the inexpensive Android head units that are common in aftermarket vehicle installs. The unit currently in use overheats around its TDA7388 audio amplifier. Once heat builds up, Android becomes severely laggy, reverse-camera use can freeze the system, and audio can repeat the last fragment played until the unit reboots.

The KiCad project lives in the mibs510/OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit repository on GitHub; these links point at the commit this page was built from.

OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit: common questions

What microcontroller does the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit use?

The OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit is built around the RP2354B, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit PCB?

The OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit?

562 components, from 141 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit design files?

From the mibs510/OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which mibs510 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the OpenXTCM5-Head-Unit without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
