About the Irl raver PCB

Irl raver is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by hackclub, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 98 × 98 mm, with 292 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the ESP32-C3_SUPERMINI_TH and PCM1808PWR. By type, the board carries 173 diodes, 75 capacitors, 32 resistors, 8 connectors, 3 ICs and 1 switch.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

I made an audio visualizer using JavaScript at raver.tobycm.dev, made it into a Chrome extension as well. This will be the sequel to the 2 digital version by having a physical audio visualizer lol.

I am very lucky to have @dhylands as my mentor throughout the designing process: giving me valuable tips like using test points, make test boards for subsystems to test them if they actually work, and general schematic and PCB designing.

Irl raver: common questions

What microcontroller does the Irl raver use?

The Irl raver is built around the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Irl raver PCB?

The Irl raver measures 98 × 98 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Irl raver?

292 components, from 25 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Irl raver design files?

From the hackclub/pixeldust repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Irl raver design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with hackclub. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Irl raver without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
