About the Midi controller PCB

Midi controller is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Tommie1236, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-W-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 515 components from 64 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AT25SF081-SSHD-X, LM4040D33, MCP23S17_SO, ESP32-WROOM-32U and USB2514B_Bi. By type, the board carries 180 diodes, 99 capacitors, 74 switches, 62 resistors, 46 ICs and 32 connectors.

It belongs with the audio, robotics & motion and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

lighting focused midi controller

- motorized faders. Mostly for dimming controls, enough in the playback section and 1 as Master. I chose motorized so they could sync with the controlling software if the value changes and for for example if you were to switch banks to a new set of controls. (mydmx doesn't support that but i wanted to design my controller to work with almost anything.)

- Buttons. for playbacks/executors en general control, a whole lot. Of Course. what would a controller be without a lot of buttons. I also want them to have black with transparent text keycaps and rgb leds below to show the status of the…

Midi controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Midi controller use?

The Midi controller is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Midi controller PCB?

The Midi controller measures 100 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Midi controller?

515 components, from 64 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Midi controller design files?

From the Tommie1236/midi-controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Midi controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-W-2.0 license, which Tommie1236 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Midi controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
